Nothing much, just a set of brake pads. I went for a safety inspection and was told that I failed because of wear and that for $189 they could replace the pads for me. I haven’t priced out this job, but that sounded a bit  steep for just pads.

I am a trained mechanic but will admit that my skills are a tad rusty. Getting the pads clipped into the piston was a bit of a challenge, and I had to improvise a method of compressing said piston with the tools I had with me; thankfully one of those tools was a big-ass clamp.

Costco installed my tires, and I went back after a couple of days to have the wheels re-torqued. They were a bitch to get off, but part of that could just be the anemia caused by my cancer. Lots of standing on the lug wrench and pounding things with a hammer (which I broke). The worst part was clipping the pad into the piston, especially in the dark. But the job is done and the car feels normal. So far nothing has fallen off and I’ve managed to stop every time I wanted to so I’ll consider this a success.

This is my issue with inspections. Places have a conflict of interest in which they can “fail you” and then offer to fix it on the spot.

At least when we had emissions controls here in BC, it was government run inspection facilities.

Yeah those wheels were torqued on way too much. Someone with an air tool that just went as many ugga duggas as possible. Torque wrench always for me! It should be pretty easy to get lugs off by hand with a smallish lug wrench if torqued to spec.

Nice! $ 189 doesn’t seem too bad, but certainly not as satisfying as doing it yourself.

Sounds to me like Costco went to town with the air gun originally on your wheels. That annoys the hell out of me personally.

Costco is pretty good, and I actually saw them hand torque the wheels, at least when I came back for the check after 30 miles; that’s not to say they couldn’t have used an impact on the initial install, but I don’t believe that they do that.  Due to my illness I am extremely weak these days, so that could be playing a factor as well.

that’ s what you do, use a clamp to compress the piston. Open the brake fluid reservoir incase the pressure blows the cap off. (happened once)

It’s actually normal and expected procedure to use an impact gun. The problem is the assholes that don’t use what’s called a torque stick.

This, is a torque stick:

They limit the amount of torque the impact gun actually imparts to the lug. “Dial-a-torque” impact guns are not a valid alternative because they require constant recalibration to actually work as described. Torque sticks don’t, and they work every time.

You can also just tighten them most of the way with the impact and then do the last couple turns with the impact

Doing my serpentine belt tomorrow. Was quoted $150. Just because you have to remove the fan shroud to getit around the fan...... ima do it tomorrow when i can work inside my friend’s garage. Belt was $19 from the oem supplier.

It wasn’t Costco - i t was the shop that did the safety inspection. They had to pull the wheels to check the brakes and they’re the ones that overtightened the wheels. When I go back there, which I will since it’s a free retest, I’ll ask them to hand torque the wheels or at least use a torque stick.
